Name Change Pt.2

Early in the week Washington announced the new name will be released 2-2-2022 Groundhogs day, which I guess has grown speculation around a “Hogs” centric name. In the video and the president’s brief Jason Wright stated it will not be Wolves/ Red Wolves due to copy right issues with what we believe is the Minnesota Timberwolves. As fans continue to be divided and call each other out over the fandom of these names I feel like the organization really fumbled this one, and as for the fans go people are allowed to like and not like whatever they want and we as individuals don’t really get to say otherwise.

Across sports there are multiple overlapping names SF Giants, NY Giants, STL Cardinals, Arizona Cardinals, Sacramento Kings, LA Kings, to name a few not to mention the countless examples across college sports. I feel like it’s more a lack of effort than a hurdle. To me it just seems odd to involve the fans with all this voting and get this huge push of like 80% of fans that get behind this name and then just be like “Nah”. These fans have been through a lot since Snyder took over and the push/ passion that came from a lot of people behind that name I think deserved a lot better.

With rumors, theories, and fan investigations still pouring out the new name people have conjured up out of left field seems to be “Admirals” which I like better than Commanders and I think is way more marketable. The uniform clips look really good; Im especially excited about the black alternate, having the uniforms look good and cool logo will go a very long way. Looking at the play on the DC flag and the two tone stripes on the helmet, and the wild picture of the “W” from behind Ron’s head on the glass. I’m getting a very Monuments vibe which my dark horse guess for the name is Washington Monuments. I have nothing to back that up it’s just a pure thought that has run wild in my brain, Im currently pulling for RedTails or Warthogs(if it has to be a play on hogs).

I am disappointed about the outcome of the name selection unless, of course, they are doing the worst thought out misdirection of all time, but they are still my team. I hope the name is something we can all get behind which surely winning will help with. It seems the only thing we as a fan base can get behind together is wanting Dan Snyder gone. I’m excited and anxious about the name release I guess we will see what happens. I’ve found myself begrudgingly missing the old name these last few months, but I’d love to hear what your guys thoughts or guesses about the name are.

  1. I’m not really sure which way to lean on the name change, honestly. There are so many articles with so many speculations, at this point, that it’s really hard to pinpoint which way they are going. I did, however, read an article last night that stated that a Twitter post had a ‘Washington Admirals’ hyperlink that lead back to the team page. I’m not really sure where that leaves us. It could have been a fluke, it could have been a tech savvy fan doing what tech savvy people do, or it could have been an accidental name release by whoever runs the team website. I personally like the idea of the team having an animal mascot rather than a person or thing. So, with Redwolves being ruled out, I like Red Tails or Warthogs. I was really hoping for a Red Wolves end result, so unless they lied and pulled the wool over our eyes, that won’t be happening. I can’t foresee, with it being a professional organization, that they would try and pull a fast one on their fans, so it’s anyones guess at this point. With all of that being said, I believe that the heart of the team and fans still remains the same and that, at the very least, the players still deserve our devotion and support. It’s all just a waiting game for now though.
